I think I’ll consider this my new flagship image. An astro-pano-selfie, taken early last Friday morning on the rocky shore of lake Tekapo. What a stunner of a night it turned out to be! This image consists of 9 frames taken through roughly a 180° angle. The center frames face toward the west. You can see Mount John slightly left from center, then the southern alps to the right. The milkyway formed a arc over the western horizon later in the night.
The red luminescence in the sky is a phenomenon known as “Air glow”. The red layer of air glow occurs at altitudes of 150-300km above the earths surface. Red light emissions are given off by atmospheric molecules that have been excited by the suns radiation during the hours of daylight.
