“The Sentinel”
The Milkyway rises high in the sky, while Te Hoho rock (near cathedral cove) stands tall and strong like a soldier on night watch. Unfazed by the waves breaking at it’s eroded base.
Centuries of wind and waves have eroded this enormous pinnacle of pumice breccia rock into it’s unique and iconic shape.
The photo is a single exposure using artificial light to balance the foreground exposure with that of the night sky. I used a daylight colour calibrated LED bounced off an adjacent cliff for light diffusion.
The LED is set to a colour temperature of 5500 Kelvin (what we consider to be white light, The same as direct sunlight.) to which the camera white balance is also set. As you can see, this reveals the natural colour of the night sky and the Milkyway galaxy.
