On my journey back to NZ this month, I decided to take a detour and do some backpacking through Croatia. I flew to Dubrovnik and spent a couple of days enjoying the sights of the historic old town and the hill top views.
On my 3rd day in Croatia I caught a bus north.
I traveled to a place considered to be one of the most beautiful sights on the planet, known as Plitvicke jezera (Plitvice lakes national park).
Plitvice Lakes National Park is a 295-square Km forest reserve in central Croatia & on the boarder of Bosnia & Herzegovina.
The area is famous for its chain of 16 terraced fresh water lakes, joined by waterfalls, that extend into a limestone canyon.
Founded in 1949, Plitvice is one of the oldest national parks in Southeast Europe and the largest national park in Croatia.
In 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register.
