I took my camera gear out on Saturday night in an attempt to caputre the tail end of the Perseid meteor shower, Which occurs anually at this time of year.
The meteors were scarce but once the moon set around 2:30am the sky became remarkably clear.
This was my first night shooting astro since I’ve been back in the southern hemisphere so there were many deep sky objects that was excited to capture.
This image was taken from Ohuka park in Whitianga.
The two bright blobs in the sky are known as Magellanic Clouds.
The Magellanic Clouds are two irregular dwarf galaxies, only visible from the southern hemisphere.
They are members of the Local Group (comprised of over 54 Galaxies) and are orbiting the Milky Way Galaxy.
The large Magellanic cloud is around 160,000 light years away from earth, and the small cloud about 200,000.
